Book Direct with the Owner at Georgetown with Accommodation Hamilton Island in Adelaide City, for all your Attraction and travel needs.
Whether you cycle, walk, ride or drive, Georgetown is a place to stop, stay and enjoy the views of the Southern Flinders Ranges! Originally named George Town, the town was most probably named after George Fisher, who along with his brother Charles Fisher was the second owner of Bundaleer Station. Surveyed in 1869 to be the hub of the mid-north, the township grew to a population of around 400 during the 1880s. The Georgetown of today continues as a centre of grain production in South Australia. It is a prosperous agricultural area producing grain, legumes, sheep and cattle. The Heysen Trail winds through Bundaleer, down onto the plain into Georgetown, and then heads west to Crystal Brook. A local hut is available nearby for hikers traversing this beautiful trail and looking for accommodation. As well as this, the Mawson Trail for cyclists meanders just east of the town. Stop in at the Georgetown Memorial Playground and nearby Federation Park, where you can view farm machinery manufactured in Georgetown by the pioneers. Step back in time and visit the general store (built on the current site in 1912). Explore the original cellar, lean on the authentic old counter, have a cappuccino, and don't miss the mural on its north wall depicting the pioneering days in Georgetown. Meals are available at both general store and at the local pub, and before you leave town, be sure to have a 'cold one' at this country hotel true to tradition! Three kilometres south of Grorgetown is Hiskey's Hut, renovated for Heysen Trail hikers to sleep over. There is an open fire, rain water and other basic amenities available. The annual Georgetown Community picnic is held in March. Games, competitions, entertainment, food stalls and bar facilities - but that's not all! A great family day, incorporating the community tug-of-war for the Georgetown cup. If you would like to visit Georgetown, make sure you get in touch with the Georgetown General Store for more information about the region.
